Ashish Kapadia – Green Dot New York

Ashish Kapadia has spent his entire career working in the Bronx and couldn't imagine doing it differently. His career has been in education and he couldn't imagine that any differently either.   What is different is his position at the helm of the new Green Dot school in New York. A joint effort with the local teachers union, the new school is located in Mott Haven, a low-income, high crime section of the South Bronx where only 40% of students graduate within four years.
Kapaida started out teaching social studies to eleventh graders at Taft High School, located just north of Yankee Stadium. He lasted only one year before switching to another high school, about two miles away where he taught ninth through twelfth grades and stayed for seven years. In 2007, Kapadia decided it was time to lead a school as an administrator. But it wasn't time to leave the Bronx. Kapadia, 31, says the chance to oversee a charter school gives him the freedom to help make substantial differences in the lives of many teens in the area.
"This particular area of the South Bronx has many struggling high schools and needs a strong charter high school that provides an option for parents," he says.  "I really feel that we can improve the students' literacy and numeracy this year and we're going to see these kids improve."
