Making College a Reality

Melinda Gates has a simple test when she tours the urban high schools funded by the foundation that she and her husband run.  As she observes classrooms and talks to teachers to see the foundation's dollars at work, she asks herself "Would I send my kids here?" 

At the Animo Pat Brown Charter High School in South Central Los Angeles, a predominantly Latino area where street gangs are the reality and college just a dream for many youths, Gates' answer was "Yes."
